This past week I have been collecting Scholastic orders in class. Students had been sent home the previous week with the current Scholastic flyers. I will keep collecting order forms until this Tuesday. On Tuesday I will place the order online.
I wanted to let you know that you are also able to place an order online yourselves, at any time, at the Scholastic Reading Club website: http://www.scholastic.ca/clubs/
To place an order go to the Scholastic Reading Club website and on the left hand side click on ‘parent pay.’ When you place an order please use our class account # (7723506). This will enable us to collect points with every order that we can use towards purchasing resources for the classroom. I am especially hoping to use the classroom points to purchase French resources since I think we could really use some new and engaging French reading material.
Speaking of French resources, I would like to point out that Scholastic Canada also sells French books. We haven’t been receiving the French flyers (although I am going to request them) however if you go to the website and on the left hand side click ‘Club de lecture’ it will take you to a page that has the French Scholastic Club flyers.
For English material click on the appropriate grade level on the left side bar and you will be able to access the three most recent flyers for that grade level that you can order from.
Wherever you are finding books just be sure to keep encouraging your child to read!
For the vocabulary we are studying for our dictées students are studying the definitions of the words so that on the dictée they can provide a definition of each word they spell. This is to ensure that they not only know how to spell the words but also know their meaning and how to use them. There is not much point learning the words if they don't know what they mean. If you would like to help your child study the definitions or if they have not finished finding the definitions during the time they are given to do so in class an excellent resource is the online version of the Larousse dictionary, This can be accessed at:
One of the great features of this dictionary is that when you search a definition for a verb in the dictionary it gives you the option of clicking a red button that says 'conjugaison' and it will provide you with the conjugations of that verb. It also provides a sentence for each definition which gives an example of how the word could be used. This dictionary is one of the most reputable French dictionaries in print and their online version is also excellent.
